AT FELA! ON THE BROADWAY SHOW IN LAGOS
After 14 months run at the Broadway and London’s Royal National Theatre, FELA! succeeded in turning all its critics to fans but the crew admitted after meeting the press in Nigeria that they were yet to meet their toughest critics ever.Bent on proving to Nigerians amongst whom Fela lived and died that they know Fela as much as any other Nigerian, the FELA! cast took on the concert space of the The New Afrika Shrine on Thursday night, 14th April, 2011, and presented a tribute concert version of the show.
Devoted Fela fans in their numbers gathered together at the shrine under the breeze of spinning ceiling fans in this steamy warehouse-like club, and fully convinced the FELA! cast knows the ways of Fela, they excitedly filmed the production on their camera phones as the smell of marijuana wafted through the air.
The performance of the FELA! cast earned rave reviews from Kuti's children, and Femi Kuti joined the cast onstage on his saxophone for an encore. "Now that you have been to the Shrine, I'm sure my father has blessed you," he said."It means more to us than you can possibly imagine to be here and share this moment with you," Sahr Ngaujah, who earned a Tony nomination in the title role on Broadway, told the crowd. He also wished the Nigerians luck with the presidential election set for Saturday.
The Thursday night event was a tip of what is to be expected at the at the prestigious Eko Hotel’s New Expo Centre from April 21 to April 25. The expo hall of Eko Hotel is been reconstructed to look like the Broadway theatre in New York and the build up of publicity on the show has greatly increased the sale of tickets.More ticket outlets are now open at Victoria Island: Eko Hotel, Life House Sinari Danijo off Ajose Adeogun, Four Points Hotel, Chicken Republic Adeola Odeku Rd, Terra Kulture, Robert’s Café and Mega Plaza. At Ikoyi; Quintessence, Falomo shopping centre, Chicken Republic (Awolowo rd). At Lekki; The Hub, Palms Shopping Centre, Newscafe, Palms shopping centre. At Surelere; Shoprite (Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Mall), Chicken Republic (Bode Thomas).
Beyond the stage, a lot more activity is surrounding the FELA! show in Lagos. On Sunday, April 17, a cocktail welcome reception will be held at the Eko Hotel by 7pm-9pm. Afro Beat industry night at Tribeca will hold on April 18 by 7pm-10pm. A breakfast seccession hosted by Beetah organization will hold on April 19 at Terra Kulture by 10pm-12pm. The opening night of the show will start by 7pm at the Eko hotels on April 21. An after party Excel Louge by Mapocolo will be 10pm on April 22. The FELA! show will run 7pm on April 22, 7pm on April 23, 2pm and 7pm on April 24, 2pm and 7pm on April 25th which is also the closing night. Lagos’ FELA! experience will be wrapped up with a farewell party hosted by Quintessentially on April 26th.
FELA!, an original Broadway musical produced by Shawn ‘JayZ’ Carter and Will Smith and directed by Bill T. Jones tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms and cutting lyrics ignited the spirit of empowerment and cultural awareness in a generation.

KINABUTI FLAUNTS ' OUR GHETTO "
Kinabuti is a Nigerian based Fashion Label created by Caterina Bortolussi, an Italian designer and entrepreneur who has lived in Lagos for the past six years. Caterina has drawn from her inspirations and past experiences to shape the Kinabuti Label into what it is: an ethically driven collection that fusions elements of Africa’s vibrantly colored traditional clothing with the eclectic spirit of European contemporary design.
In producing the Kinabuti Brand we use fabrics and trimmings that are sourced globally, enabling us to bring together different international colours, designs and viewpoints in beautiful harmonious cloths which of themselves embody the spirit of Kinabuti. The spirit of Kinabuti is the melding together of global inspiration, design and production for the greater good of our community
Ever since it’s unveiling during the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), Kinabuti has been committed to using fashion as a vehicle to empower the Nigerian young generation through the development of vocational skills and new job opportunities.
In Our Ghetto, an initiative launched by Kinabuti Lab, the non-profit arm and driving force of the company, is an example of the way they operate. “I didn’t want to work with professional models -says the designer-. Work wise it could be easier because they have the experience but I’ve been living in Nigeria for the past six years and have always been surprised by the striking beauty and posture of the Nigerian women. So why not give them the opportunity they deserve?”

In Our Ghetto project proved to be a success. Prior to the first Fashion Show, Kinabuti Lab went into the communities of Bundu Waterside, Eleme, Marine Base Waterside and Igbikisikalama in Port Harcourt, and from one hundred and sixty participants selected twenty two girls who were trained by professionals in the skills of make-up, hairstyling, walking and the other elements needed to give them a deep understanding of the modelling profession, so that they could put it into practice during the Fashion Show and hopefully onwards developing professional modelling careers.
The initiative was so contagious that several celebrities such as Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Eku Edewor, Nneka Egbuna and Duncan Mighty participated either in the Fashion Show or the concert held in the community of Bundu WatersideWINNER OF MULTIKRA CLUTCH PURSE + FAB MAGAZINE COOL ISSUE

THE MOVIE
The story lines of Bent Arrows weave together to explore many themes such as sexual abuse, undue parental control, betrayal, revenge etc. The movie tells the story of three innocent young girls and how their innocence became battered in the hands of men, turning them into broken-hearted and emotionally shattered girls looking for revenge.
Idara (Sylvia Oluchy), a young girl sent to live with her maternal uncle in Abuja, is brutally raped. When she gets pregnant, she is forced to sleep with a doctor as payment for an abortion. Repeatedly abused by men, she becomes hardened and proceeds to use her sexuality to get the finer things of life. Lola (Omoni Oboli) after almost being smothered by her parents (Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva) and being cheated on by her fiancée, Seyi (David Nnaji) decides to become a bad girl. A teenage Ngozi (Stella Damasus) goes into prostitution as a means of fending for her sick mother and younger sisters. Bitter and vengeful, Ngozi is on a mission to revenge the wrong done to her mother several years earlier.
Speaking on the movie premiere, Isang Ubong-Awah said 'when we had the premiere of 'Bent Arrows' in Abuja we were awed at the rate of the success and the amount of accolades people showered on the movie. This was what gave us the confidence to once again premiere the movie in Lagos before its arrival at the cinema.
Directed by Lancelot Imaseun, 'Bent Arrows' has its own independent sound track produced by Cobhams Asuquo and features notable names like Styl Plus of Olufunmi fame, the Rooftop MC's(Lagimo), Nikki Laoye and Stella Damasus.
Bent Arrows will be in cinemas across the federation from April 15th, 2011.
