Going about the raves of delicacies, Amala is a food everyone has come to reckon with especially in the South-West.
Though believed to be the favorite food of the indigenes of Ibadan, it is still loved by Yoruba majority. Amala could either be white, brown or even black in colour and can either be made from yam or plantain which is sun-dried and grounded. It comes out in a floury form and it is called yam flour or ELUBO in Yoruba. It is eaten with ‘ewedu’ or ‘abula’.
INASTRANTE: This food joint has been in existence since the early 70s.It is located beside the cultural centre and not too far from the state secretariat. Inastrante was founded by Ahaja Muslinat Akanke Tijani of blessed memory.
It is tagged as the most popular of all. This joint is managed by the late Alhaja’s children. Mr Tijani, one of her sons told Gistmaster.com that they are patronized by the high and mighty in the society. Inastrante, is endeared to the peoples’ mind because of its great hospitality.
OSE OLOHUN: It is located along the BODIJA/UI road. It’s popularly called Skye Bank because of its very close location to SKYE BANK Bodija.
Owned by an Alhaja, who is popularly called by the name of the canteen,the food is lovely and the smallest amount of meat goes for #50. The place is patronized with its closest customers, the bankers and even students of the University of Ibadan. The Alhaja’s children also help in the management of the canteen.
MAMA OPE: Owned by Alhaja Silifat Ogunleye,it is known for its classy reception. This amala joint has corporate waiters and they are easily identified in their lovely uniforms.They appear well trained and very accommodating.
The joint venue is divided into 3 areas, namely: the VIP lounge, Floor and Hall. A customer chooses wherever he or she feels like. formerly located at Mokola main market , it now boasts of a bigger, finer and more accommodating place at Jenbewon area of Mokola. Their food is prepared strictly with Gas Cooker. Alhaja’s children also help in the management of the canteen.
OLA MUMMY: Another striking joint in Ibadan is OLA MUMMY FOOD CANTEEN. Located at Ojurin side of Bodija, this canteen is also home away from home with the level of hospitality. Owned by Alhaja Bola Yusuf Odolaye who drives a Honda Odyssey, Ola Mummy Food Canteen also has an extension of her shop at the state secretariat.
This joint formerly occupied a medium shop at Ojurin side but now relocated to a nearby but bigger shop that provides a big parking space, this signifies the high patronage she gets. Reliable sources reveal that her children are abroad.
IYA ADURA: Though owned by Iya Adura, it is popularly known as SOCIAL because of its location inside the SOCIAL WELFARE compound in the state secretariat behind FIRST BANK in Bodija.
This joint used to be in a small building built with planks of wood but due to the level of patronage and the kind of personality that frequents the place, a new building was constructed. Despite the kind of personalities that goes there, the joint is a place for every one with different pocket sizes because their meat sells for as low as #50.
ALABEDE: This joint has been in existence for a very long time. It is located along the Agbowo-Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan.
Due to this location, the joint gives easy access to people travelling to Oyo. Their main means of cooking is the local kitchen utensils .People believe that no matter the time of the day, one will always get food to eat once you have your money.
MAMA ANAT: This joint derived it name from its location beside the department of anatomy inside the University of Ibadan. Mostly frequented by lecturers, students and non-academic staffs of the varsity , she cooks well with her adogan and stove. She manages the place with her children.
IYADUNNI: Located at challenge round about, this hot spot serves the challenge-ring-road axis. This canteen is so popular with its very tasty meals that one can’t resist the hot Amala, ogufe and fresh fish. Her children also come around to supervise the staff when Iyadunni is not available.
